On October 13, a paragraph in the Los Angeles Times\u2019\nSouthland section covered a raid on a \u201cHippie Commune\u201d in Death Valley National\nPark twenty-one miles west of Badwater, CA. The raid, conducted by sheriff\u2019s\ndeputies, national park service rangers and the CHP, turned up several\nsawed-off shotguns, handguns, rifles, and ammunition.  The raid went off without a hitch which, given\nthe number of weapons found, is a small miracle.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifteen people were arrested. A scruffy little man named\nCharles Manson was among those taken into custody. A Sheriff\u2019s deputy dragged\nhim out of the 12×16-inch cupboard in which he was hiding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The raid had nothing to do with the August murder spree\nwhich took the lives of seven adults and Sharon Tate\u2019s unborn son. Manson\nwasn\u2019t yet a suspect. The raid was all about the auto theft ring operated by the\nfamily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Manson sat in jail on the auto theft charges, did some\nfree members commit murder on his behalf? \nManson\u2019s paranoia about squealers had already resulted in Donald\n\u201cShorty\u201d Shea\u2019s murder on August 26.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

SHORTY SHEA<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The following five cases have connections to the Manson\nFamily.  Some of the connections are\ncompelling, others are peripheral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 5, John \u201cZero\u201d Haught was found in his Venice\nBeach home with a single gunshot wound to his head after losing a game of\nRussian Roulette. At least that is the story told by witnesses Catherine Gillies,\nBruce Davis, Sue Bartell, and Madaline Joan Cottage \u201cLittle Patty\u201d \u2013 all of\nthem Manson family members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

JOHN “ZERO” HAUGHT<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Each witness was interviewed separately and recounted Zero\u2019s\ndeath. Investigators thought the accounts sounded rehearsed. They were\nsuspicious, but couldn\u2019t prove a thing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Leslie Van Houten learned of Zero\u2019s death, she made it\nclear she didn\u2019t buy the Russian Roulette story.  She was incredulous that he was playing the\ndeadly game by himself as the witnesses stated. An anonymous man told a newspaper\nreporter he was there when the shooting occurred, and that one girl had pulled\nthe trigger.  The man was never\nidentified and the death is officially a suicide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 7, an early morning walker discovered the\nmutilated bodies of teenagers Doreen Gaul and James Sharp. The victims were\nstabbed so many times that police thought they were shot gunned to death. The overkill\nwas like the Tate\/La Bianca murders and there is a Manson\/Scientology\/The\nProcess (a cult) connection. But without proof the murders remain unsolved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

REET JURVETSON “JANE DOE 59”<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Reet Jurvetson, known for over 40 years as Jane Doe 59, was\nanother victim of random violence in 1969. Years after her death Manson was\nasked about Reet.  He said he didn\u2019t know\nher and knew nothing about her murder. Was he telling the truth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

December 1, 1969, Joel Pugh, estranged husband of Sandra\nGood, was found dead in a London hotel room. \nHis wrists and throat were cut. No suicide note was found. Was it a\ncoincidence that Bruce Davis was in the UK at the time of Pugh\u2019s death?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, the LAPD has said that as many as a dozen\nmurders may be linked to Manson and the family. While decades of dust gather on\nthe open case files, at least the Tate\/La Bianca murders are solved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can thank now-deceased Susan Atkins for busting the case\nwide open. The hippie girl who looked like a babysitter to her Sybil Brand\nInstitute cellmates told them some horrific stories that they, at first,\nfigured were bullshit. But after Susan described in gruesome detail Sharon\nTate\u2019s last moments, without showing remorse, the inmates went to the jail\nauthorities to turn her in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If not for Susan, the perpetrators of the August murders may\nnot have been identified for many more months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 1, 1969, LAPD\u2019s Chief Edward Davis held a press\nconference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standing behind 15 microphones, Chief Davis announced the\nofficial end of the case. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am Edward Davis, chief of police of the City of Los\nAngeles. Today warrants have been issued for the arrest of three individuals in\nconnection with the murders of Sharon Tate Polanski, Abigail Anne Folger, Voytek\nFrykowski, Steven Earl Parent and Thomas John Sebring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained that the same people were also involved in the\nmurders of Leno and Rosemary La Bianca.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe development of information from the two separate\ninvestigations, the Tate and La Bianca cases, led detectives to the conclusion\nthat the crimes in both cases were committed by the same group of people.  At one time two lieutenants and 17 men were\nworking on only the Tate case.  The Tate\ninvestigators interviewed 625 people, some four and five times each.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief Davis referred to a break in the case that occurred\ntwo weeks prior to the warrants. He didn\u2019t mention her by name, but he meant\nSusan Atkins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also not mentioned by name was the first victim of the\nsummer murder spree, Gary Hinman. Chief Davis referred only to the \u201cTopanga\nCanyon murder case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief Davis wrapped up the press conference as a late arrival,\nMayor Sam Yorty, took the stage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSorry, I got here so late,\u201d said the mayor. \u201cThe city\ngovernment and the Police Department are very grateful to the news media for\nthe cooperation we have had . . . many people could have damaged our case if\nthey hadn\u2019t been so cooperative . . .\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The round-up of the Family members implicated in the\nmurders was underway. The case against them was solid enough to bring to the\ngrand jury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

December 5, 1969, Susan Atkins testified before the Los\nAngeles grand jury. Prosecutors got first degree murder indictments against\nManson, Watson, Krenwinkel, Van Houten and Kasabian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

December 21, 1969, Leslie Van Houten talked to cops about\nher possible cooperation. One week later she recorded a confession with attorneys,\nbut decided against cooperating with prosecutors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By Christmas 1969, Manson and his co-defendants, Tex\nWatson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten were in jail\nfacing capital murder charges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Manson and his band of murderous nomads behind bars,\nAngelenos breathed a sigh of relief. The \u201860s ended on a miserable note. They thought\nthe \u201870s would be better. They were wrong. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the 1970s the risk of homicide increased six-fold\nfrom the 1950s, and by the early 1980s the term serial killer began to turn up\nin mainstream media reports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New monsters stalked the streets of Los Angeles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
