Crimes theater is open! Grab a bucket of popcorn, some Milk Duds and a Coke and find a seat. Tonight\u2019s feature is the LADY OF BURLESQUE (aka THE G-STRING MURDERS) directed by William A. Wellman and starring Barbara Stanwyck and Michael O\u2019Shea. While not a classic noir film, it is a murder mystery and, I think, it pairs nicely with the post on <a href=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/?p=12740\">Betty Rowland<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"598\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/gypsy-rose-lee_ny-public-library.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12779\"\/><figcaption>Gypsy Rose Lee (Photo courtesy New York Public Library)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-10415\">LADY OF BURLESQUE is based on the novel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_G-String_Murders\"><em>The G-String Murders<\/em><\/a>\u00a0written by\u00a0strip tease\u00a0queen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gypsy_Rose_Lee\">Gypsy Rose Lee<\/a>. There have been claims that Craig ghosted the book, but I believe Ms. Lee did it on her own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"376\" height=\"516\" src=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/craig_rice_Time1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-724\" srcset=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/craig_rice_Time1.jpg 376w, https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/craig_rice_Time1-218x300.jpg 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 376px) 100vw, 376px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-10416\">If you\u2019re not familiar with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Craig_Rice_(author)\">Craig Rice<\/a>, she wrote mystery\u00a0novels and short stories, and is sometimes described as \u201cthe\u00a0Dorothy Parker\u00a0of\u00a0detective fiction.\u201d She was the first mystery writer to appear on the cover of\u00a0<em>Time Magazine<\/em>, on January 28, 1946.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we roll the feature, let\u2019s enjoy one of Gypsy Rose Lee\u2019s dance routines\u2013followed by a clip from a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tex_Avery\">Tex Avery<\/a>&nbsp;cartoon starring the lecherous wolf character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gypsy Rose Lee strip routine\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5Wib7WC2jVs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Red Hot Riding Hood  \/ Tex Avery cartoon 1943\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UidQS5193_I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>TCM says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>S. B. Foss, owner of the Old Opera House on Broadway in New York City, promotes his new recruit, burlesque dancer Dixie Daisy, hoping that she will draw a large audience. Dixie\u2019s performance draws cheers from the crowds and from comedian Biff Brannigan, who ardently admires Dixie even though she hates comics because of past experiences with them. When someone cuts the wire to the light backstage that signals the presence of the police, the performers are surprised by a raid, and pandemonium ensues.
