Times about a man, Monty J. llingworth, who had been arrested for the 1937 murder of his wife, Hallie, in Clallam County, Washington.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Because Illingworth had committed the crime in Washington it wasn&#8217;t covered extensively\u00a0here, but I have to wonder if Raymond Chandler saw the piece in the newspaper and\u00a0was inspired to write THE LADY IN THE LAKE (published in 1943).<a href=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/chandler.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1937\" alt=\"chandler\" src=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/chandler.jpg\" width=\"414\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/chandler.jpg 460w, https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/chandler-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The true story of the Lady began on July 6, 1940 when two fishermen found the well preserved body of a woman floating in the waters of Lake Crescent, near Port Angeles, Washington. The corpse had been wrapped in blankets and tied\u00a0with heavy rope.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/chandler1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1938\" alt=\"chandler1\" src=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/chandler1.jpg\" width=\"206\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/chandler1.jpg 294w, https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/chandler1-176x300.jpg 176w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a>The body was not decomposed as one might have expected, nor was it\u00a0bloated as &#8220;floaters&#8221; generally are. Dr. Kaveney, who examined the body,\u00a0said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;I never saw a corpse just like this one before. The flesh is hard, almost\u00a0waxy. She must be nearly as large as when she went into the water. I&#8217;d say\u00a0she is about 5 feet 6 inches in height and that she weighed about 140\u00a0pounds when alive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There was a chemical reason for the relatively good condition of the woman&#8217;s\u00a0body, she had saponified, she had literally turned into soap! In fact, she\u00a0had become very much like Ivory soap, the &#8220;soap that floats&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even though they were unable to I.D. the woman her cause of death was\u00a0certain, she had been strangled.<a href=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/it-floats.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1942\" alt=\"it floats\" src=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/it-floats-300x260.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/it-floats-300x260.jpg 300w, https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/it-floats.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The press dubbed the unknown woman The Lady of the Lake. She was\u00a0buried\u00a0as a Jane Doe in a pauper&#8217;s grave. She was exhumed a couple of times in an\u00a0attempt to give her a name, but it wasn&#8217;t until criminologist Hollis B. Fultz\u00a0began to look at missing persons reports from the area that the case came\u00a0together.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hollis focused his attention on a missing waitress, Hallie Illingworth. Hallie\u00a0had been an attractive woman with auburn hair &#8212; the corpse also had auburn\u00a0hair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hallie was married to a beer truck\u00a0driver, Monty Illingworth, at the time of her disappearance. Monty told people that Hallie had run off with a Navy\u00a0lieutenant commander.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Further investigation revealed that Hallie had never contacted any of her\u00a0family, which the cops found suspicious. Also suspicious was the fact that\u00a0Monty had filed for a divorce five months after she&#8217;d vanished on the\u00a0grounds of incompatibility, not desertion.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1940\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/HallieLathamIllingworth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1940\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1940\" alt=\"HallieLathamIllingworth\" src=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/HallieLathamIllingworth.jpg\" width=\"260\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/HallieLathamIllingworth.jpg 260w, https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/HallieLathamIllingworth-192x300.jpg 192w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1940\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hallie Latham Illingworth<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A chart was made of the dead woman&#8217;s unique upper dental plate and advertised in professional journals. Finally a dentist from South Dakota came forward to positively identify The Lady of the Lake as Hallie Illingworth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Monty had moved to Long Beach, California shortly after Hallie allegedly ran off with a Navy man. Monty wasn&#8217;t alone, accompanying him\u00a0was Elinore Pearson the daughter of a\u00a0wealthy\u00a0timber magnate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Illingworth was arrested at 1351 St. Louis Street, Long Beach. His mother and Elinor Pearson visited him while he was waiting to find out if he&#8217;d be extradited to Washington. In his jail cell, Monty turned to face his mother and said: <em>&#8220;Mother, you know I didn&#8217;t do it; I didn&#8217;t.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>To which his mother replied:<em>\u00a0&#8220;Yes, I know you didn&#8217;t, son.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The couple had been living as husband and wife yet Elinor was coy when asked if she was married to Monty, she would neither confirm nor deny it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1946\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MontyIllingworth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1946\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1946\" alt=\"MontyIllingworth\" src=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MontyIllingworth.jpg\" width=\"260\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monty Illingworth<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The truck driver was extradited to Washington where he was tried for Hallie&#8217;s murder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On March 5, 1942 a Washington jury found Monty Illingworth guilty of second degree murder. They&#8217;d agreed on the lesser charge because they felt the crime had been one of passion and not premeditation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Monty was sentenced to life in Walla Walla Prison, but was paroled after only nine years. He returned to California where he lived until his death in the early 1960s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A writer of Chandler&#8217;s caliber wouldn&#8217;t have needed anything more than a small newspaper piece to become inspired. Of course I don&#8217;t know if Raymond Chandler actually saw the story about the Lady of the Lake, but I like to think so.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Ladyinthelake.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1944\" alt=\"Ladyinthelake\" src=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Ladyinthelake.jpg\" width=\"361\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Ladyinthelake.jpg 361w, https:\/\/derangedlacrimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Ladyinthelake-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On October 29, 1941, a story appeared in the L.A.
